The injured criminal undergoing treatment
Notorious criminal Byas Lakua wanted in several police stations across Odisha and Jharkhand, was injured and nabbed following an exchange of fire with the Rourkela police late last night.
According to reports, an encounter took place in the Akhayasila Waterfall area under the Bisra police station limits of the city when Byas Lakua opened fire on police personnel when they tried to apprehend him. In retaliation, the police encounter involved controlled firing, injuring Lakua on the right knee.
Following the encounter, the accused was admitted to the Rourkela Government Hospital for treatment.
Reports also added that multiple cases of theft, robbery, and murder are registered against Byas Lakua in various police stations across Jharkhand and Odisha. His modus operandi involved committing crimes in Odisha and fleeing to Jharkhand.
Sources also added that the Rourkela police have now adopted a tough stance against criminals given a spurt in crimes in recent months. Notably, the encounter occurred amid similar operations in Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar.
In the latest reports of such an exchange of fire, Sambalpur police nabbed two cattle smugglers from West Bengal on Monday night after an encounter. In this case, criminals had opened fire and hurled three rounds of fire at police personnel, following which a retaliatory measure was taken. Both the accused sustained injuries in their legs and were taken to for treatment.
Similarly, on Saturday night, the Twin City Commisionerate Police were engaged in an exchange of fire in Bhubaneswar with a criminal from Bihar involved in various cases of ATM theft. The accused was injured in the encounter and eventually taken to AIIMS for treatment.
