Fog and chill in Ganjam of Odisha
The coldwave persisting over Odisha is unlikely to subside in the next 24 hours and chilly weather may continue under its influence. The weather department had earlier attributed the chill to cold winds blowing in from the north and northwest of the state at a time when cloud patterns bringing in chill have gripped various parts of the country with intense chill over central and north-west India, including Delhi.
In Odisha, the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack continued to experience a steady drop in temperature, a trend that has continued since New Year’s Day. While on 1st January, the state capital had recorded a low of 14 degrees, the mercury plummeted to this season’s low of 12.7 degrees on the night before. Similarly, the Silver City also reeled at 12.4 degrees Celsius.
Among major cities, Rourkela and Jharsuguda have consistently recorded temperatures below 10 degrees in 2025 with predictions for this trend to continue for at least a day more.
However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a rise in minimum temperature by at least 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the next 2-3 days. The sign of an expected respite comes even as foggy conditions prevailed over most parts of the state with the districts of Angul, Sundargarh, Kandhamal, and Koraput being the worst affected.
Meanwhile, normal lives being thrown out of gear in several places of the state along with scenes of fog persisting until 10 am was reported from several places.
“It has become almost impossible for young children and the elderly to step out of their homes early morning owing to intense chill,” stated a morning walker from Parlakhemundi. Similarly, another also pointed out the risk to vehicles traversing through this layer of fog.
