Police claimed on Sunday to have cracked a burglary bid case at Utkal Grameen Bank located in Barpali town of Bargarh district. Police have arrested at least five persons in this connection, Inspector General (IG) of Police, northern range, Himanshu Lal said in a presser.
According to the senior cop, the key accused of the bank heist identified as Srikanta had incurred losses amounting to around Rs 12 lakh through online gaming.

The loot bid was made yesterday evening and alert back employees thwarted the loot bid by using a siren. The miscreants had masked their faces while committing the crime.
Police recovered several weapons and other incriminating instruments from the possession of the five accused, including a pistol and two live bullets in addition to two fake guns. It is noteworthy that police records indicate they have cases pending against them at different police stations across the State.
“The incident unfolded the previous evening when the five accused in masks, attempted to rob the bank by brandishing firearms and knives. Fortunately, vigilant bank staff swiftly triggered the alarm system, effectively thwarting the robbery attempt and leading to the swift apprehension of the suspects,” the IGP said.

“Youngsters involved in major bank heists are often linked to online gaming, what we have known during interrogations. After losing money in the gaming apps, they are resorting to crime to recover the financial loss,” the IGP expressed.
“I was discussing with the SP to find out the legalities or status behind the persons committing bank robbery after losing money in online gaming apps. So that, we can curb the illegal activity and prevent youngsters from committing crimes,” the senior cop added.
