Minor girl allegedly raped inside temple premises in Odisha's Sambalpur; accused priest detained

A 45-year-old temple priest allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl inside a temple premises in the Jamankira area of Odisha’s Sambalpur district. 

The alleged rape incident occurred on Sunday and has since triggered anger and concern in the region.

According to the victim’s family, the crime took place when the minor accompanied her father to the temple to assist during daily rituals.

Priest Appointed Temporarily; Allegation of Abuse During Duty

Sources reported that the regular priest of the temple was unavailable that day, prompting the temple committee to appoint another priest temporarily; and as such, the accused, reportedly in his mid-40s, was serving in this interim role.

Reports added that the young girl had gone to the temple with her father to help with the rituals and daily offerings. After the noon prayers and lunch, when the child was resting near the Bhoga Ghar (offering room), the priest allegedly took advantage of the situation and sexually assaulted her.

Immediate Police Action; Victim Undergoing Medical Examination

Following the complaint filed by the victim’s family, Jamankira police detained the accused priest and launched a formal investigation. Sources said that a medical examination of the minor has been scheduled, and the suspect is being interrogated for further details.

The incident has left the local community stunned, especially as the crime was committed inside a place of worship by someone expected to uphold moral values. Residents have demanded the strictest possible punishment for the accused.

Police are yet to comment on the case and the allegations.
