According to sources, the accused identified as Sushant Kumar Das allegedly discharged two gunshots into the sky, prompting the cops from Astaranga Police Station to take action. Das faced charges soon after the event, leading to his arrest. He was subsequently produced before a local court.
Astaranga police are yet to comment on the unwarranted situation.
Legal framework and enforcement challenges
Celebratory firing remains a persistent issue despite amendments to Section 30 of the Arms Act (1959), which criminalises unauthorised discharge of firearms at public gatherings.

Violators face up to two years’ imprisonment and fines. However, enforcement gaps persist in rural areas, where such incidents are often unreported until tragedies occur. Local police emphasize stricter monitoring of licensed firearms during festivals.
Public safety measures post-incidents
Police should form dedicated teams to apprehend fleeing suspects and conduct community outreach programs to address safety concerns during public celebrations. Local leaders must urge the residents to report suspicious activities amid rising scrutiny of unchecked celebratory practices.
Broader context of violence during celebrations
Incidents aligning with the patterns of celebratory violence are observed in several parts of the country. For instance, a February 17 celebratory firing at a wedding procession outside Odisha killed a two-year-old boy, underscoring systemic lapses.
