KIIT University girl student death case: Odisha Police hand over key evidence as NHRC continues probe

The NHRC continued its probe into the Nepalese student's death at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. Odisha Police handed over key evidence as officials assured full cooperation.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday continued its probe for the second consecutive day into the unfortunate demise of a Nepalese student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar.

The investigation team is meticulously gathering information as they conduct their on-ground inquiry at the University campus located in Bhubaneswar.

Coordination with Odisha top cops:

On Thursday, the NHRC team convened a meeting with Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Suresh Devadatta Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena. Both top cops offered their perspectives concerning the case to the NHRC representatives.

Both officials have extended full cooperation by providing all requested information and evidence.

“All pertinent data had been handed over to the investigative body, including all necessary evidence. An officer has been specifically assigned to support and facilitate the ongoing investigation by the NHRC,”  Police Commissioner Singh assured while speaking to media persons.

The findings are highly anticipated as they will shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

On-Ground Investigation:

On the first day, the NHRC executed an exhaustive five-hour interrogation session involving the deceased's fellow hostel residents at the Queens Hostel. In addition to questioning the students, the team engaged in dialogues with key University officials, including the KIIT registrar and the hostel warden.

Possible Areas of Concern: 

As the investigation unfolds, issues surrounding the safety and well-being of international students at Indian universities are spotlighted. The incident has underscored the need for more robust safety measures to prevent unfortunate incidents involving students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Worth mentioning that the NHRC has directed the investigation team to complete and submit its report by 10th of this month.
