Jailbreak in Odisha: Two accused break skylight, escape from police station lockup in Puri

In a daring move, two theft suspects escaped from the lockup of the Gop police station in Puri district by allegedly breaking through the skylight of the toilet on Tuesday evening, informed sources.

According to reports, the duo was earlier arrested in connection with a motorcycle theft case and kept in custody when the incident occurred. Preliminary investigations suggest that they used the pretext of using the toilet to reach the lockup’s washroom, from where they broke the skylight and fled.

The skylight was made up of cement and had reportedly weakened following water ingress during rains and general use. Sources also added that the accused may have been trying to loosen the structure over the past few days, although it remains subject to investigation at this point.

Lockup Breach Raises Security Concerns

The escape has raised serious questions about the security measures in place at the police station.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the accused exploited a structural vulnerability in the detention facility, gaining access to the roof area through the toilet skylight. 

The exact time and manner of the escape are being examined through CCTV footage and an internal inquiry.

Upon discovering the breach, Gop police immediately launched a manhunt and are conducting raids at multiple locations to trace the fugitives. Their identities have not been officially disclosed at this time.

Police Launch Statewide Search

A search operation has been initiated across various parts of Puri district and adjoining areas. Checkpoints have been set up, and nearby police stations have been alerted.

Senior officers have also been informed, and a departmental probe is likely to follow to ascertain lapses, if any, on the part of station personnel. As of this morning, the escapees remain at large. Police have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity or the known whereabouts of the accused.
