IMD issues heatwave warning for 13 Odisha districts; check key details

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert to as many as 13 districts in Odisha for severe hot and humid conditions on Monday.

These districts are Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

As per reports, Yellow warning has been issued to as many as nine districts for heatwave condition and 10 districts for humid conditions on Tuesday.

The regional Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar has predicted that the day time temperature across Odisha will increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius for the next three days. The condition will prevail till May 15.

Sambalpur Hottest

As many as 19 cities across Odisha witnessed maximum temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Sambalpur was the hottest city in the state with 43.2 degrees Celsius. It was followed by Titlagarh (42.5 degrees Celsius) and Bolangir (42 degrees Celsius).

Other places registering temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius include Sundargarh (41.8 deg C), Angul (41.7 deg C), Jharsuguda and Hirakud (41.6 deg C each).

State capital Bhubaneswar recorded a high of 40.7 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has warned that this oppressive weather could cause discomfort, particularly among vulnerable sections such as the elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses. 

Authorities have recommended avoiding outdoor exposure during peak hours, wearing light and loose cotton clothing and staying hydrated with sufficient intake of water and traditional drinks such as rice water, lemon water and buttermilk.
