A young woman took her own life by consuming poison after allegedly being unable to bear the mental distress caused by harassment from local youths in Ustapada village under Kabisuryanagar police station in Ganjam district on Monday.
Sources reported that the deceased, identified as Rajeshwari Pradhan, was allegedly subjected to lewd comments and obscene gestures, along with her sister, by some youths in the village.
Unable to tolerate the harassment, Rajeshwari reportedly consumed poisonous substances at her home. Subsequently, family members found her in critical condition and admitted her to the Community Health Centre in Kodala where doctors declared her brought dead.
Sources added that the deceased’s sister identified the main accused as Kankada Pradhan, a native of the same village. He was reported to have made indecent gestures and vulgar remarks at the woman earlier in the afternoon and also threatened her with sexual assault.
Later, Rajeshwari disclosed the matter to her sister and the duo decided to confront the accused. However, he allegedly continued with the obscenity and made similarly incriminating remarks to them both.
Upon returning home, Rajeshwari reportedly found the threats and comments extremely disturbing and was unable to bear the mental pressure, killing herself shortly thereafter.
“The man repeatedly gestured to my sister indecently and made vulgar remarks while she was returning home. Later, he did the same thing to me. In the evening, when I was in another room, she consumed poison,” stated the deceased's sister while adding that the accused was related to them as a cousin brother.
Meanwhile, a written complaint has been filed by the deceased’s family at Kabisuryanagar police station. However, there has been no response or statement from the police regarding the incident so far. Besides, reportedly, no action has been taken against the accused yet.
