Niranjan Khadanga
In an era where most people spend their post-retirement days with family and leisure, one retired teacher from Odisha has chosen a different path that is filled with social service.
Dedicating his life to environmental conservation, Niranjan Khadanga, a former schoolteacher from Pratap Dhanajaypur under Buguda block in Ganjam district, has become a local hero for his tireless efforts in planting and nurturing trees.
Braving the scorching heat, Khadanga sets out every day with a hoe on his shoulder and buckets of water in hand, determined to tend to the green cover he has cultivated. Rather, such is his dedication towards nature that he is lovingly known as the ‘Tree Teacher’ by locals.
Notably, his work is not just planting trees, but it’s more about creating forests. Khadanga’s goal also involves informing others of the value of each one of them that has been planted. To achieve this, he adds a label to the stem of the tree, informing others of the species' name and benefits.
“Nowadays, pollution is rampant. Trees are being cut everywhere, and the environment is suffering. I wanted to do something for society and thus, I began planting trees in schools, temples, and other public places,” said Niranjan Khadanga in an interaction with OTV.

Unlike many retirees who prefer a quiet life, Niranjan has turned his retirement into a mission. His consistent work over several years has significantly contributed to preserving the region's natural beauty.
In recognition of his green crusade, he has received accolades from the former Governor of Odisha, the previous Chief Minister, various government departments, and several civil society organisations.
Locals say they take pride in living in a village home to such a committed environmentalist.
“He didn’t just stop teaching after retirement; he started teaching us a new lesson, the value of nature,” says Jawaharlal Khadanga, a resident of Pratap Dhanajaypur.
Residents believe that Niranjan's unwavering commitment to greenery is inspiring a new generation. They feel the government should highlight his story more prominently so that people across the state become more conscious of environmental protection.
In a time when deforestation and climate change dominate headlines, individuals like Niranjan Khadanga prove that change can begin with one person and a single sapling.
