After Ruben Banerjee, a new book by Prakash Mishra, the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, has ignited controversy by portraying the ex-Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, in a less than flattering light.

In the book titled ‘Comedy in Khaki’, Mishra refrains from naming Patnaik outright but paints a picture of him as a leader disengaged from critical governance issues. Mishra recounts episodes where, during vital government meetings, Patnaik would unexpectedly deviate to discuss culinary topics like mutton and fish.

One anecdote highlights an instance where, upon being briefed on Naxalite movements in the Ganjam and Kandhamal regions, Patnaik reportedly redirected the conversation to inquire about the previous evening’s dinner menu.

The book also narrates a peculiar episode during Patnaik’s visit to Hinjili, his own constituency. Mishra describes how Patnaik appeared unaware of the local grievances in the constituency he represented and even asked to meet the local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), much to the chagrin of the assembled constituents.

Moreover, the book implies that Patnaik often relied excessively on advisors for decision-making. Mishra’s criticisms echo the themes of an earlier work by journalist Ruben Banerjee, which also questioned Patnaik’s leadership style.

Mishra’s book, with its portrayal of a somewhat unorthodox leader, has undoubtedly sparked spirited discussions and political debate across Odisha.

“Everybody is entitled to his own opinions. He (Mishra) has given his own viewpoints. People will review and judge it. People are the best judge,” said BJP Odisha President Manmohan Samal.

“Mishra was the Police DG when Naveen was the Chief Minister. There must have been truths in the book. He has reflected the feelings of common people in his writing,” said Congress leader Nishikant Mishra.

“His (Mishra) statement about Naveen Patnaik is false and fictitious. Bharatiya Janata Party has turned into Bharatiya Liers’ Party. They are always resorting to lies to demean the reputation of Naveen Patnaik,” said BJD leader Sarada Prasanna Jena.

Meanwhile, reflecting on his book, Mishra said, “He (Naveen) didn’t have focus about anything. He was not taking any decisions by himself, but rather leaving those to others. I have written the chapter to let people know that if they don't get aware, they will get leaders like this.”

In response, political analyst Prasanna Mohanty said, “He (Naveen) was depending upon others for the governance and hence his weakness came to the fore. There are many truths in Prakash Mishra’s book. He wrote many unknown things that didn’t appear in media reports.”
