'Ambulance Man' of Odisha ferried over 3,000 patients, mostly expectant mothers, on motorcycle

In the remote areas of Keonjhar district, Loknath Mahanta has become a life-saving figure, affectionately dubbed the ‘Ambulance Man’.

Employed at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Rebanapalasapal under Telkoi block, Mahanta has committed the past five years to delivering emergency medical care via a motorcycle ambulance. His service has been crucial, particularly in remote villages where road access remains minimal or non-existent.

Since acquiring the motorcycle ambulance in 2019, Mahanta has successfully transported over 3,000 patients, many of whom were expectant mothers, to hospitals for urgent treatment.

This ambulance measure was a necessary response to the healthcare challenges faced by these isolated communities, where conventional ambulances struggle to operate.

Ranked among the unsung heroes, Mahanta demonstrates remarkable skills in manoeuvring through treacherous terrains, ensuring patients receive timely medical attention. His dedication has not only enhanced the prospects of healthcare delivery in the region but has also sparked widespread appreciation from the community and beyond.

Odisha government introduced the motorcycle ambulance scheme to bridge the service gap in rural health access. Mahanta’s efforts reflect the potential impact of this initiative, underscoring the importance of innovative solutions to age-old problems.

“I have been driving the bike ambulance since 2019 and bringing expectant mothers and children to hospital in critical condition. Since then, I have brought around 3,000 patients from inaccessible areas of the district,” the ‘Ambulance Man’ expressed.
