Former BJD MLA Bijay Mohanty no more

Former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Bijay Mohanty died on Sunday afternoon at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Bijay Mohanty, who served as an MLA from the Bhubaneswar Central constituency, was found unresponsive at a guest house before being taken to the hospital. However, authorities at the state-owned hospital declared him brought dead upon arrival.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted as per procedural requirements to ascertain the cause of death, medical authorities ascertained.

An influential politician, he was elected twice on a BJD ticket, securing victories in the 2009 and 2014 state elections.

Dr Dhananjaya Das, superintendent of Capital hospital said, “Mohanty was brought to the hospital and upon his arrival we conducted ECG along with other examinations. However, he was declared dead. As per the rule, postmortem will be conducted.”

“Mohanty was received dead. We will share the information to police and following inquest we will perform postmortem,” Das added.

Expressing grief over the passing away of Mohanty, BJP National Vice President and Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda took to his X handle and wrote, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing away of senior politician and two-time former MLA, Bijay Kumar Mohanty. I had both a political and personal relationship with him. Along with praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. Om Shanti.”

Taking to X, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi wrote, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of former Bhubaneswar MLA (central) Bijay Mohanty. Along with praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul, I extend my condolences to the grieving family. Om Shanti.”

Leader of Opposition and BJD President Naveen Patnaik wrote, “I am saddened to learn about the demise of former MLA and senior leader of the party, Bijay Kumar Mohanty. His contributions to the welfare of the people will always be remembered. In this time of grief, I extend my condolences to his family and pray for the eternal peace of his noble soul. Om Shanti.”

Expressing grief over the untimely demise of Mohanty, BJP MLA Babu Singh said, “He was very humble and believed in simple living. His untimely demises is an irreparable loss for Bhubaneswar and Odisha.”
