Railway Track
A 22-year-old engineering student has tragically died by suicide, allegedly due to distress caused by his college's actions. Tapan Acharya, from Botanda Mahaveer Nagar in Bhubaneswar, was found dead on the railway tracks near Lingaraj Station.
Tapan was a student at a local private engineering college. His father, Ajay Acharya, has accused the institution of contributing to his son's tragic decision. According to Acharya, the college confiscated Tapan’s mobile phone earlier that day, which he believes distressed his son.
“The college seized Tapan’s phone around 11:00, which meant he couldn't answer our calls,” alleged the deceased student’s father.
“After speaking to the college, we were asked to come on 1 May. I believe my son was mentally tormented by the college authorities, leading to this tragedy,” he alleged.
A tracking device on Tapan’s electric vehicle helped family members locate his body near Lingaraj Station. This incident has ignited a wider debate on the pressures students face in educational institutions and the obligations of colleges to ensure student well-being.
Odisha Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The college has not made any public statement regarding the allegations. This tragedy has sparked dialogues, highlighting the critical need for reforms and awareness in educational environments.
