In Puri, preparations are underway for the highly awaited Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. The process traditionally began on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on Wednesday with auspicious blessings for the construction of three majestic chariots of the Holy Trinity.

Traditional rituals saw temple Sevayats (servitors) offering sacred garlands, known as Agyan Mala, marking the formal initiation of the chariot-building process.

Ratha Katha Anukula rituals begin

Following a puja ceremony, skilled Vishwakarma Maharana Sevayats (craftsmen) carried out the customary tying of a sacred saree, proceeded by the ritualistic cutting of logs with a golden axe, a practice steeped in tradition. The sequence of preparation commenced first with the chariot Taladhwaja, then Nandighosha, and finally Darpadalana—three pieces of Dhaura logs have been prepared accordingly.

Coinciding with this, Chandan Jatra for the sibling deities also began today. This ceremonial event includes the daily Chapa rituals (boat rides) on Narendra Pokhari (a sacred pond), featuring the movable idols of Madanmohan accompanied by the goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi, symbolically providing the Lord with respite from the intense summer heat.

“Ratha Katha Anukula rituals for the chariot-making smoothly began today (on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya) with active cooperation of servitors, good wishes of all, and above all, the Blessings of Lord Jagannath. In the days to come, Bahara Chandan, Bhitara Chandan, Snana Jatra, and Ghosha Jatra will be held,” SJTA Chief Administrator, Arabinda Padhee said.
