Two new electric double-decker buses are about to reach Odisha from Mumbai soon ahead of the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations.

These orange colour buses, adorned with designs showcasing the vivid cultural heritage of Odisha, feature prominent landmarks such as the Konark Sun Temple wheel and Dhauli stupa.

As per sources, two electric double-decker buses have already started the journey from Mumbai to Odisha and the vehicles have already covered 400 km. The vehicles are likely to reach Odisha tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. The trial run of the vehicles will be conducted before Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

As per the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), three more electric double-decker buses are expected to join the fleet soon.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to promote cleaner transport and celebrate the State’s rich cultural history during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

The visual designs on the buses include representations of local landmarks that embody Odisha’s historical essence and artistry. These buses aim to provide both a modern utility and a cultural tribute, offering a unique means of travel across the region.

The initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to enhancing transport infrastructure while promoting cultural tourism as Odisha prepares to welcome participants for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

As per sources, CRUT will introduce as many as five double-decker electric buses for Khordha, Puri and Cuttack districts in the first phase.

A 10-year contract has been signed with a private organisation for the supply, operation, and maintenance of the buses and employing workers for it. If required, the contract period may be extended for two more years.

CRUT intends to use green energy for its operations to promote clean and green shared mobility on a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) basis through the appointment of a fleet operator.
