Cost-cutting: BMC to set up self-run fuel station in Bhubaneswar

In a bid to improve operational efficiency, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to establish its own fuel station and garage. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on external service providers and manage the municipal fleet more effectively.

Streamlined Operations

The proposal was discussed in a recent meeting attended by senior figures, including Bhubaneswar's Mayor, Sulochana Das. The initiative has garnered substantial support from city officials. 

Mayor Das emphasised, “Owning our refuelling station could operate on a commercial model, reducing the necessity to procure vast amounts of diesel from private suppliers. Furthermore, opening access to the public could generate additional revenue.”

Economic Benefits

The proposed station is intended to supply both diesel and petrol, potentially reducing expenses and improving the management of the fleet, which includes over 500 vehicles and machinery. A tentative location has been identified near the Temporary Transit Station (TTS), offering ample space for development.

A Proven Concept

Taking inspiration from other successful models across Indian municipalities, Mayor Das expressed confidence in replicating such efforts in Bhubaneswar. “We anticipate commencing construction soon,” she remarked. 

Once operational, the project is expected to save costs and streamline vehicle servicing within the municipal corporation.
