Tension gripped the Baidyanathpur locality of Berhampur in Ganjam district when a police constable was attacked with a sharp weapon while he was trying to resolve a domestic dispute. The attacker, identified as a family member involved in the quarrel, was later subdued by police personnel led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) Saravana Vivek M on Friday.
According to sources, a constable sustained grievous injuries after being attacked with a sharp weapon in Badakhemundi Sahi under Baidyanathpur police limits in Berhampur. The injured has been identified as policeman Bijay Kumar Mahapatra.
The violence stemmed from a family dispute. Ganesh Chandra Pattnaik, the younger brother involved in the quarrel, was threatening others in his family while brandishing the weapon. Concerned for safety, his elder brother Anil Pattnaik contacted the police.
When some officers from Baidyanathpur Police Station arrived and attempted to calm the situation, Ganesh suddenly turned violent and attacked constable Bijay with the weapon, injuring his right palm. Two of the constable’s fingers were hurt in the assault.
Following the attack, additional police personnel, along with the SP, arrived promptly at the scene. The attacker, Ganesh, was successfully overpowered and taken into custody.
