Conjoined twin survivor Jaga from Kandhamal, who was separated from Kalia in a marathon surgery at AIIMS-New Delhi in 2017, has demonstrated exceptional progress in his recovery.
Jaga is now fully fit and healthy. As he has turned 10 and showing keen interest in studying, his family members expressed concern about his education. Hence, preparation is reportedly underway to start Jaga’s schooling soon.

As per reports, Jaga’s family members recently met Kandhamal Collector and initiated a discussion about their son’s schooling. The district administration and Health Department have also started their preparations in this regard.
CDMO On Jaga’s Schooling
“Jaga is now leading a normal life. As per the advice of experts, his memory power will further develop if he goes to school. However, we are yet to get a written order from the Odisha government in this regard. Jaga will also undergo a second surgery. However, the time for it is yet to be fixed. We are taking stock of various things like- in which school Jaga will study? In which environment he will reside and with whom he will befriend? We are trying to send him to school from this academic session” said Kandhamal Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Manoj Kumar Upadhyay.
“We will request the school authority to give him special care. We are also looking for various options like boarding school with hostel facilities,” he added.
As per sources, an effort is underway to provide Jaga a secure and healthy environment during his schooling. Planning is also afoot to make Jaga helmet-free by conducting another surgery.
“I am happy to know that I will go to school soon. I am going to different places with my father. Now, I will go to school,” said an elated Jaga.
“Jaga is interested in studies. I met the Collector and discussed the matter. He has assured me to start Jaga’s schooling soon,” said Jaga’s mother Puspanjali Kanhara.
Exceptional Recovery
Earlier in December, a team of doctors from New Delhi AIIMS had come to Phulbani Headquarters Hospital to check the health condition of Jaga. Six months have passed since then and Jaga has shown healthy signs of recovery.
As per reports, Jaga is now playing outdoors after coming out of the special cabin of the hospital. He is living his life like any other normal child. He is also joining his father Bhuyana Kanhara in morning work, accompanying him to the tiffin stall, market, temple, park and other places. Jaga is also showing interest in studies.
Notably, conjoined twin Jaga was separated in a marathon surgery at AIIMS-New Delhi in 2017. After remaining under treatment for over two years at AIIMS-New Delhi post-surgery, the twins Jaga and Kalia were discharged in September 2019 and admitted to Cuttack SCB MCH under the observation of a team of specialists.
While Kalia died of septicaemia in the hospital on November 25, 2020, nearly three years after the rare surgery, Jaga was allowed to go home and stay with his parents following improvement in his health condition.
