Concerns grow over student fatalities in Odisha tribal hostels

A rise in student fatalities at state-run hostels for scheduled tribes in Odisha is raising an alarm, with 26 student deaths reported since July 2024. 

This information was shared by Nitinanand Gond, Minister for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development, in response to a question by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ranendra Pratap Swain in the Odisha Assembly on Friday.

Widespread Impact

As per the information provided by Minister Gond, the majority of these unfortunate incidents were recorded in Rayagada district. The troubling figures reveal that out of the 26 deaths, six resulted from suicides, while the remaining 20 students passed away due to illnesses while receiving medical treatment.

Government Response

Minister Gond expressed concern over the statistics and highlighted ongoing efforts to address the health and well-being of students in these hostels. The government is reportedly working towards improving living conditions and providing better mental health support to prevent further tragedies.
