Congress Demonstration Over Women Safety
The second phase of the budget session of Odisha Assembly began on a stormy note on Friday. Apart from the protests by BJD, the Congress MLAs also staged a demonstration today.
Before proceedings of the Odisha Assembly began, the Congress members gathered at the Gandhi statue, located within the assembly premises, to express their concerns over the alleged lack of safety for women in the state.
Congress Legislature Party Leader, Ram Candra Kadam, along with several party colleagues staged the demonstration. The protest highlighted concerns regarding women's safety, bringing the issue to the forefront prior to the discussions in the Assembly.
The Congress legislators' demonstration aimed to draw attention to what they describe as pressing safety issues that, according to them, require urgent address by the state authorities.
“The Odisha government has failed to deliver in the past eight months. The government has failed to make any concrete improvement and the overall law and order situation has collapsed. The Congress has decided to stage a demonstration both inside and outside the Odisha Assembly,” said Kadam.
According to Kadam, Odisha can prosper only when the women are safe. There have been several incidents where minor girls are getting pregnant, which speaks volumes about the state of affairs in the state, he said.
Earlier in the day, the BJD legislators also created ruckus in the Assembly over the Odisha government decision that March 5, the birthday of former chief minister Biju Patnaik, will not be celebrated as Panchayati Raj Diwas.
