Inhumane! ‘Class 6 student’s hand cut, salt rubbed on wound’ in Odisha hostel

In a shocking incident, a Class 6 tribal student was allegedly subjected to inhumane torture by his senior hostel inmates in the Khunta block of Mayurbhanj district.

According to sources, the victim was tied up and subjected to brutal assault by his seniors who cut the latter’s hand with a blade and rubbed salt on the wounds.

The matter came to light when the victim expressed his fear of returning to school after the holidays. On inquiry, his parents were horrified to learn about the inhumane treatment he had endured at the hostel, sources added.

According to the victim, a group of senior students often consumed alcohol on the hostel terrace. When he informed the headmaster about their activities, they retaliated by targeting him. He was locked in a room, beaten mercilessly, and subjected to severe physical abuse.

Moreover, the seniors allegedly threatened to kill him if he disclosed the incident to anyone, leading him to suffer in silence for weeks.

Victim Narrates Ordeal

“While I had gone to the bathroom, I heard some noise coming from the roof. When I went there, I found some senior students were consuming alcohol. Later, I informed the matter to the headmaster. But, after some time, I was called by the seniors. They started abusing me by tying my hands. I sustained injuries in the attack. They even cut my hands using a blade and rubbed salt on the wound,” the victim narrated.

Complaint Lodged

His parents have now lodged a written complaint at Khunta Police Station, prompting an official investigation. A case has been registered, and police are probing the matter.

This disturbing incident reportedly took place in February, yet the school authorities failed to inform the parents, raising serious concerns over the hostel’s management and student safety.

“My son has not informed me about the incident. We got to know the matter yesterday and called the headmaster. When I inquired about the matter, the headmaster, who also did not inform me, said that the parents of the accused students were called upon and deposited undertakings. The headmaster and those on hostel duty were equally responsible,” said victim’s father.

The case has sparked outrage, with parents and local residents demanding strict action against the accused and accountability from the school administration.

What Police Say

“This is a very sensitive matter. An investigation has been launched and necessary action will be taken against those who will be found guilty,” said Panchanana Mohanta, IIC, Khunta police station.
