Bridge built at Rs 64 Cr, 3 years ago in Jagatsingpur, now lies in dilapidated condition
A newly constructed bridge over the Biluakhai River under Biridi block, connecting Hajipur and Sankhari in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, has developed cracks and gaps in several places, raising concerns among local residents.
Residents alleged poor construction quality. The bridge, constructed at a cost of Rs 64 crore, was expected to serve as a crucial link for over 50,000 people in the surrounding areas, including those traveling from Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara to Bhubaneswar and Puri. However, visible cracks and structural defects have made locals hesitant to use the bridge, fearing for their safety, said sources.
“The bridge is a lifeline for us. However, it has developed multiple cracks. It should be maintained properly,” demanded Pradyumna Biswal, a local.
Echoing the same, Kedarnath Bhuyan, another local said, “The bridge was inaugurated a couple of years ago. But within six months, it developed cracks. Though it has been informed to concerned authorities including the contractor, no measure has been taken yet.”
During the construction phase, locals had reportedly warned the contractors and officials about substandard work, but their concerns were ignored.

Responding to the allegations related to the condition of the bridge, Jagatsinghpur District Collector J Sonal said that a technical team would be sent to inspect the bridge.
“The locals have expressed their concerns over the matter. We will inquire the matter by an engineer and necessary repair works will be subsequently carried out,” the collector assured.
