Senior politician Amar Satpathy sparked a fresh debate with his critique of how regional parties have fared in the recently concluded Jharkhand and Maharashtra Assembly elections. Despite assertions to the contrary, he contends that regional parties did not secure outright victories in these regions.

In Jharkhand, the regional party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) displayed noteworthy results by collaborating with national parties during elections. This synergy seems to have been crucial in their electoral strategy.

Satpathy did not hold back in his criticism of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), stating that claims of regional party strength in these states are misleading. He questioned the legitimacy of such assertions and expressed doubts as to who might have advised the BJD leadership to propagate these claims.

“JMM did not win alone in Jharkhand elections. It has joined hands with the national party Congress and it is the win of the alliance. When Naveen Patnaik came to power, there was the support of the BJP. Even after the poll debacle, they are greedy for coming to power again by joining hands with Congress. When the BJD was formed, BJP’s help was sought,” Satpathy said.

He pointed out the BJD's past electoral successes, underscoring the importance of the alliance with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in securing those victories.

Satpathy also scrutinised the suggestion by some BJD leaders to potentially form a government with the Indian National Congress, questioning the rationale behind this move if regional parties were genuinely thriving.

The BJD was yet to come up with any response addressing Satpathy’s statement.
