Accused youth caught red-handed
A robbery attempt at the State Bank of India (SBI) main branch in Bargarh town was foiled on Saturday, thanks to the swift actions of local residents and the bank’s security guard.
According to sources, Dilip Mohapatra, a resident of Remanda locality under Bheden block, was in the process of depositing cash of Rs 77,000 at the branch’s designated counter when an unidentified youth attempted to grab the funds and flee the scene.
“A mishap occurred when I was about to deposit cash of Rs 77,000 in my bank account. I had already kept the money on the counter. Taking advantage of loneliness, an unidentified youth attempted to snatch the money and decamp with it,” Dilip Mohapatra said.
“The youth had not followed me; rather he took advantage of a chance,” Dilip added.
Acting promptly, the security guard, along with help from vigilant members of the public, managed to catch the suspect. Identity of the accused has not been disclosed yet.
Police officers from the Town Police Station quickly arrived following reports of the incident and placed the suspect under arrest. The stolen cash was soon recovered from him.
Local police have initiated a detailed probe into the alleged loot to ascertain further details surrounding the attempted crime.
“A customer was depositing cash of Rs 77,000 when a miscreant attempted to snatch the money from the counter,” manager of the SBI branch Jaya Kishan Maharana stated.
“Such incidents had never occurred in our branch earlier. Our staff and security guard were vigilant; because of which, they could nab the man,” the manager added.
