A man and his uncle died after consuming suspected ‘spurious liquor’ in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district. Family members alleged the two fell sick after consuming the alcohol. The deceased duo has been identified as Bibhuti Samal and his uncle Gopinath Samal.

Sources said the two men experienced severe chest pain after returning home in an inebriated state. Family members rushed them to Patkura Hospital from where they were referred to Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

Allegations of suspicious activity have surfaced, prompting local police to initiate a thorough investigation. The exact cause of the deaths is yet to be determined and will be confirmed following post-mortem examinations.

Authorities are closely examining the potential for food or drink poisoning as a factor in these untimely deaths.

“He was wandering around and consuming alcohol. I think this happened after drinking alcohol because there was no fight or anything in the family. We had admitted him to Patkura hospital and later shifted to Kendrapara DHH,” alleged Kanchan Samal, mother of Bibhuti Samal said.

Similarly, Bibhuti’s uncle Biranchi Narayan Samal alleged, “He had consumed alcohol somewhere and came home in a critical condition. By the time, I saw him, he was dead. But for formality, we took him to Patkura from there he was once again referred. While we were worried about Bibhuti, my elder brother Gopinath Samal’s condition also worsened and he was also taken to hospital. The two had consumed alcohol. So, we suspect the alcohol to be poisonous.”

“The two have died due to poisonous alcohol. I request the government to provide necessary assistance to the bereaved family,” Biranchi added.

When contacted, Kendrapara DHH CDMO said, “They were received dead. We have not given any treatment, because they were brought dead. We have handed over the case to the police. The exact reason for their death will be known only after the post-mortem.”

Meanwhile, Jagatsinghpur SP clarified that the deaths were not due to consumption of spurious liquor. The duo has died after consuming a medicine meant to spray on mushroom. The investigation is on taking various aspects into consideration.
