Ravana is worshipped in a village instead of being burnt

Demon king Ravana is generally considered the symbol of evil. The celebration of Dussehra culminates in most places across India with the burning of the effigy of Ravana which is popularly known as ‘Ravana Podi’.

‘Ravan Dahan’ is observed across the country on Vijaya Dashami. However, a nondescript village in Maharashtra is an exception. Instead of burning the effigy of demon king Ravana, the villagers worship his image and offer ‘arati’.

Moreover, the villagers of Sangola village in Akola district in Maharashtra worship the demon king of Lanka on a regular basis.

The villagers have set up a tall black stone statue of demon king Ravan. The villagers throng this statue on every Dusshera and offer ‘arati’ to the demon king. They also perform the ritual on Wednesdays throughout the year as well.

As per the legend, Ravana was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He was also a great scholar and musician. It is believed that Shiva Tandava Stotram was composed by the powerful demon king. He was so powerful that he ruled over three worlds. However, his downfall happened due to his ego.

As per the villagers, they are living peacefully due to the blessings of Ravan. The worshipping of Ravan in the village has been passed down for generations. The tradition of worshipping the demon king is 300 years old.

On Dusshera, visitors from different places throng this village to witness its uniqueness.
