Another elephant dies in Odisha’s Angul, second death in 5 days
Several days after a tusker was found dead, a carcass of a female elephant was found at Sankhamal village under Athamallik forest range in Angul district on Sunday raising concern over the safety and security of the wildlife in the region.
On being informed about the incident, Forest department officials reached the spot and started an investigation into the matter.
While the exact reason behind the death of the jumbo is not known, the autopsy report can establish the cause of the death, an official said.
A few days ago, a tusker was found dead in a paddy field in the forest range. Though the exact reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that the jumbo might have died due to electrocution.
Meanwhile, the locals have raised questions over the effectiveness of the Forest department officials following the deaths of the elephants in the region.
The locals have demanded that the department intensify patrolling in the region to provide safety and security to the animals and keep an eye on the poachers.
Notably, as many as five elephants have died in the forest division in the last five years.
