In a sheer show of disregard to the law of land and basic human rights, a Kangaroo Court at Bam village under Kankadahada block of Dhenkanal district allegedly ostracised two families of the village over the construction of ring road in the area.

Sadashiba Mahanta and Gurucharan Mahanta, heads of both the families, met Kamakhyanagar Sub-Collector Jyotiraditya Sahu on Thursday and informed him about the alleged torture by the Kangaroo Court.

It has already been seven years, since both the families were allegedly banished from the village. Sadashiba and Gurucharan alleged that the Kangaroo Court calls meetings and collect fines from the villagers whoever help them (the ostracised families).

“We have been ostracised from the village for the last seven years and fines are being collected from those who offer help like giving us food or provide water,” alleged Basantu Mahanta, a member of one of the two ostracised families.

Based on the complaint of the two families, Kamakhyanagar Sub-Collector has directed the Kankadahada Tehsildar, Block Development Officer (BDO) and Parjang Police Station to launch an investigation into the matter.

“It is unfortunate that this kind of practice still exists in society. The matter will be investigated. If the allegations are found true, stringent against will be taken against the guilty,” assured the Sub-Collector.
