A professor of Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar has developed a smart stick to help visually-impaired persons and elderly citizens in their daily lifestyle.
Dr Debabala Swain, the head of Computer Science department at the university, has developed the stick and recently put it up for display during a research conclave held at Utkal University.
The stick will not only safely escort the divyangs when they go outside on to the street but will also help them in many aspects in their day to day life, claimed Swain.
“Every time a visually challenged or an elderly person steps out of the house, s/he often requires a human assistance. I have integrated many features into the stick that can help them in more than one way,” said Swain.
“I have installed a sensor in the stick which will intimate the holder through vibration if any obstacle comes in the way while walking down the street. This will cut down the possibilities of accident,” the professor informed.
Similarly, there is a video surveillance system in the stick which will record everything when someone uses it. The video can be seen later through a mobile application.
Moreover, the smart stick comes with a GPS feature which will help the family members of the user to track his/her movement.
Besides, it also boasts of a system which can retaliate with electric shock to any assailant in case he/she attacks the user and intimate the same to a nearby police station.
