In a tragic turnout of events, Gunanidhi Bisoi, the man who attempted self-immolation in front of Kishannagar police station yesterday, succumbed to his burn injuries on Friday.

The deceased, Gunanidhi Bisoi, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. He was earlier shifted to the private hospital after undergoing initial treatment at SCB, sources said.

It is alleged that Bisoi had attempted suicide after failing to get the desired assistance from local Kishannagar police officials in connection with a land dispute and assault case registered by him.

Bisoi had had set himself on fire after pouring petrol after no action was taken by the officials of the police station despite.

Taking sou motu cognizance of the incident, the Odisha Human Righs Commission (OHRC) registered a case and served notices to Odisha DGP and I.G Police.

The Commission has directed the senior officials to submit a report in connection with the incident after an inquiry by the next hearing which has been scheduled to be held on July 25.

Earlier in the day, Cuttack Rural SP B. Jugal Kishore had termed the self-immolation bid outside the Kishannagar police station as ‘unfortunate’.

On media queries regarding harassment and dereliction of duty by concerned police station officials, the Rural SP said that already the DGP has been recommended for action against the Inspector-in-Charge.

Moreover, the prime accused involved in the case has been arrested, the SP had told earlier.
