A lower court in Odisha’s Nayagarh district convicted two persons in the gang rape of a minor girl and sentenced them to 20 years rigorous imprisonment.

The convicted duo was underage at the time of committing the crime.

Additional District Judge (ADJ) cum special judge of Children’s Court, Itishree Mohapatra, imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each convict who had gang raped a Class 10 girl student and filmed the act, the clip of which was later circulated on social media. Failure to pay up the penalty amount will invite additional imprisonment, the court clarified.

In April 2017, the Class 10 girl was on her way to a bank branch to check the balance in her account when she was accosted by the accused duo near Jhadeswari temple. The two then took turn to rape her and video recorded the act before circulating them on internet.
A case was registered at Saranakula police station in this regard and the accused duo was arrested. They were sent to a rehabilitation centre in Berhampur.

The court convicted them under Section 376 and 292. As they are adults now, they will undergo the imprisonment in jail along with other prisoners, the court said.
