  • Proposing to your future wife on one knee has been a tradition since medieval times.
  • Nowadays, however, couples are more interested in genuine and unique proposing acts.

Love brings magic to life. Even a simple person can turn into a magician and creative when he has to do something special for his beloved. And one of the most important milestones in any relationship is proposing to your dearest.

Popularly, in the Western world and nowadays even in India, the most common way to propose to someone is by bending down on the knee and asking for her/his hand in marriage.

While it surely is a very common romantic tradition today, many people do not know that it has an interesting history. This particular tradition of proposing by bending on one knee started during the medieval times when the knights used to bow down on one knee before the noblewomen and would ask their hand in marriage by typically asking, “Will you marry me?”

In medieval times, marriages and religion were interlinked and most of the proposals popped up during religious ceremonies. That is why bending on one knee is not only an act of love towards a woman or romance.

Rather, it is considered an act of complete surrender, respect, prayer, and compliance along with many other related things.

When a man bent down on his one knee to propose to his future wife it indicated his respect for her. However, the gesture and the feelings behind that act have now been lost in the modern world. Nowadays, it is more of just a trend or a way of carrying forward the tradition.

Moreover, today’s couples are quite liberal and do not give much importance to tradition or the way someone proposes to them as long as it is unique and the feelings behind it are honest and true.

If the effort is sincere, any proposal becomes unique and unforgettable.
