Loneliness

A young software engineer from Bengaluru has gone viral on Reddit after opening up about her deep sense of loneliness and isolation, both at her workplace and in her paying guest (PG) accommodation.

Posting under the username @Confident-Floor-2943, she shared that she had recently transitioned from being an intern to securing a full-time role, a milestone in her career. But while her professional life took a step forward, her personal world began to feel increasingly empty.

Her close friends have moved away, leaving her PG accommodation eerily quiet. She described feeling invisible to those around her, writing that even when she laughed or cried, nobody seemed to notice, making her feel “like a ghost.”

The tech professional noted that many people who relocate to metropolitan cities like Bengaluru for work experience similar emotional disconnection. Being far from family and familiar support systems can be especially hard for young employees trying to adapt to new jobs and demanding urban life.

In her post, she also highlighted challenges in her workplace. As the only woman on a predominantly male team, she often feels excluded, pointing out that a male colleague who joined alongside her was welcomed and treated far more warmly.

With senior team members leaving the company, she says she has been left without adequate guidance from team leads.

“The guys in my office don’t acknowledge me or involve me even in small things,” she wrote.

The feeling of isolation has seeped into her daily life as well. The heavy traffic in Bengaluru makes visiting her remaining friends difficult, adding to the sense of disconnection.

“Even if I laugh, cry, or shout, nobody reacts. I feel like I’m on the verge of a breakdown,” she confessed.
