Sunil Grover celebrates his birthday today. And as fans shower happy birthday messages on the famous comedian, here’s a take on what makes the super comedian so special and yet so different from the other leading comedians of Indian television.

Sunil Grover started his journey with Jaspal Bhatti- one of the most famous comedians during the days of Doordarshan. He has come a long way from doing small stints in Gutur Gu to rocking every episode of Comedy Nights With Kapil and later on the first season of The Kapil Sharma Show with his stunning performances.

The start of the last decade saw the emergence of many new comedians including Sudesh Lehri, Krushna Abhishek, Bharti Singh, Kapil Sharma, Rajeev Thakur, and many more who replaced the veterans in the field like Raju Srivastav and Johnny Lever. While Sunil Grover also came into the limelight during the same period, he was not a part of this group. Rather his journey was quite different from all of them. From featuring as a student in Shah Rukh Khan’s Main Hoon Na to doing the very small role of Sampat in Aamir Khan’s Ghajini, right from the start Sunil never intended to restrict him to comedy.

He gained prominence solely on the basis of his skill to portray various characters like Gutthi, Dr. Mashoor Gulati, Rinku Bhabhi. Undoubtedly he was one of the main reasons why people used to watch Kapil’s show every weekend. So what makes him so special and different from others?

He had the guts to take a stand and leave the most famous comedy show on Indian television. More importantly, he never limited himself to just comedy. While leading comedians like Krushna Abhishek and Kapil Sharma have tried their luck in Bollywood a couple of times, Sunil Grover is the only comedian to break the typecast image of comedian and emerge as a versatile actor.

Even earlier comedians like Johnny Lever and Rajpal Yadav made a good career in Bollywood but none of them have been able to shed their image as comedians and even today continue to act as comedy actors.

But Sunil Grover has broken this trend. From doing the role of Shraddha Kapoor’s father in Baaghi to portraying Gurupal Chauhan in Abbas Ali Zafar’s web series Tandav and being a leading star in the recently released web thriller Sunflower, Sunil has shown that given the chance he can do all types of roles convincingly.

Be it his Vilayati Khan in Bharat or the role of Dipper in Pataakha, Sunil has been impeccable in every character. While the other comedians like Bharti Singh, Krushna Abhishek, and Kapil Sharma continue to entertain with comedy, Sunil with his talent has proved that he is capable of doing all types of roles and has now much bigger opportunities waiting for him.
