However, there has been a very standard practice among a few Bollywood A-listed actresses that was passed on from one actress to the other. This particular practice is unique to South India.

The same came to light years ago at Akash Ambani’s wedding when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was spotted with Abhishek and Aaradhya Bachchan. Ash as usual looked beautiful in a red saree. But what attracted attention was the necklace that she was wearing.

It was the highlighting feature of her overall appearance. While it seemed natural for everyone to think that she was enjoying flaunting that elaborate necklace, a few years onwards famous fashion designer Manish Malhotra revealed the reason behind it.

Sridevi gifted her neckpiece to Aishwarya

It was a Sabyasachi neckpiece that Sridevi had got for herself. In South India it is a tradition that the senior actresses gift newcomers or younger actresses with their personal gifts like jewellery and sarees. That is why Sridevi gifted it to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who made her debut in the film industry with a Mani Ratnam movie.

After the shocking death of Sridevi, Ash wore that neckpiece in her memory at the Ambani wedding. She used to call the senior actress Sri Akka. Similarly Sridevi always called Rekhaji as Akka and had many sarees in her wardrobe specially gifted by Rekha. Similarly, Rekha also called Vyjayanthimala Akka and since then this tradition has continued.

While Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also share a close bond, no one knows whether the two have continued this simple yet unique tradition followed by Southern divas.
