  • Ponniyin Selvan 2 hit the theaters today and the early reviews are very positive.
  • This time the director Mani Ratnam has taken creative liberty and has given a new twist to the historical fictional epic.

Mani Ratnam’s magnum Opus Ponniyin Selvan 2 has hit the theaters and the reviews are quite mind-blowing for this Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan -led film. Those who have managed to watch the screenings today have said that PS2 is the pride of India.

A few super excited netizens have also said that it is much better than the overrated Baahubali. Maybe these are the die-hard fans of Mani’s work. But undoubtedly the overall review is very great for PS2.

The good thing about this movie is that the Guru director has taken a few creative liberties while picking up the storyline from Kalki Krishnamurthy’s book. The first installment from this franchise was almost similar to what was written in this famous Tamil novel.

However, for the second part, Mani has decided to add his own creative inputs in storytelling, and that has been a winning factor for PS2 apart from the chemistry between Ash and Vikram.

Now it seems Mani tried to establish the identity and characterization of all the characters in the first part and hence narrated the story almost word by word as in the historical fictional epic.

But now that the characters and their nature is well established in the minds of the audience he decided to take the creative liberty which was a must to turn this sequel into a better and superior cinema.

With VFX technology now being used even in romantic drama, it was expected that a high-octane action-oriented movie like PS2 will definitely have some scintillating scenes created with the latest technology.

However, one aspect where this sequel differs from the other Tamil movies or Indian movies, in general, is that the director here has strived to make those scenes real and not animatic.

From creating a spectacular make-believe Chola Desam to that first meeting scene between Nandini and Vikram, Mani Ratnam ’s creativity is at the top of the crest.

While it certainly is not the truth but if a director and the writer are highly creative then they can successfully make people believe that it is real and Mani Ratnam and team have effectively achieved that.

Undoubtedly, the last scene between Vikram and Ash is the highlight of the film but the romantic foreplay between Vandhiyadhevan and Kundhavai without any kisses or embracing is one of the most brilliant romantic scenes of Indian cinema in the last few years.

The movie has a few shortcomings but does not stop PS2 from being one of the best movies ever made in recent times. And as expected, compositions by AR Rehman prove once again why he continues to be the best.
