The Odisha government will launch a special awareness drive for the protection of children from Covid-19 pandemic before the reopening of primary schools across the State, said Sandhyabati Pradhan, Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

As per reports, the State government is likely to give the go-ahead for reopening schools for Class I to VII after Diwali in a phased manner.

School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash had earlier stated, the government would soon take a decision on reopening of schools for all elementary classes as the Covid graph has started declining in the State.

“After the indication was given by the minister for reopening of primary schools, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights decided to launch an awareness campaigns on the safety of children from the pandemic across the State, starting from October 20,” said Pradhan.

“The awareness campaign will continue in all districts and we will involve all stakeholders, from Collectors, SPs, child development officials, legislators, teachers to volunteers of civil society organisations, parents and, most importantly, children in the drive,” said Pradhan.

She said the main focus of the drive will centre around the protection of children from the pandemic. “We will soon discuss the proposed campaign with all district Collectors,” she added.

Notably, no classes have been conducted for primary school students in physical mode for the last one-and-a-half year following outbreak of Covid-19  pandemic in March last year.
