Recently, a new cybercrime trend has emerged where scammers pose as representatives from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to deceive individuals.
They may call you claiming that your mobile number is about to be disconnected, creating a sense of urgency. This is how the scam unfolds:
First, the scammer calls and falsely identifies themselves as a DoT official, urging you to press ‘9’ to prevent your number from being deactivated.
However, pressing ‘9’ only redirects you to the scammer posing as a telecom representative.
They then seek your personal information under the guise of fixing the supposed issue.
If you unknowingly provide your personal details, you become vulnerable to falling victim to the scam.
In such situations, it is crucial to exercise caution. Never share your personal information over the phone with unknown individuals, regardless of who they claim to be.
Government departments and banks always advise against sharing personal information over the phone. If you receive suspicious calls, refrain from engaging too much and report them promptly.
