In a gruesome incident, an elderly man was allegedly hacked to death by his daughter-in-law following a family dispute at Ranapal village under Belagadia block in Jajpur district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Pabana Hati.

According to reports, the accused Rupa Hati along with his father-in-law and mother-in-law worked in the family owned paddy field on Sunday morning. While at work a heated exchange of words ensued between Pabana and Rupa over some family issues.

Following the altercation, Rupa returned home and told her husband Utkal Hati about the incident and persuaded him to drop her at her father’s residence. Utkal somehow managed to calm her down and later went to the local market.

However, Rupa was far from being consoled. Matters took an ugly turn in the evening. While Pabana was playing Murdanga (a musical instrument) to the tune of a song alone at home, Rupa, in a fate of rage, allegedly attacked him with an axe. Pabana sustained serious injuries and died at the spot. Rupa has been absconding following the incident.

“I tried my best to convince Rupa to keep cool and went to the market. But it was beyond my though that she could go to the extent of killing my father,” said Utkal.

Later, Utkal filed a written complaint (about the murder) with Panikoili police on Monday. Based on the complaint, police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.

“Paban’s body has been sent for post-mortem. A scientific team has been called for further investigation and searches are on to nab the accused,” said a senior police official.
