Real estate developer Niranjan Rana, who also produced several Odia films, has been detained by the Commissionerate Police in connection with fraud to the tune of Rs 2 crore. 

Rana, the owner of Maa Tarini Estcon (P) Ltd was wanted in at least six cases. Police raided Rana’s residence, office and project sites on Thursday and confiscated several incriminating documents, sources said adding that Rana is being questioned by the police at present.

Rana had been arrested in 2016 and booked under Sections of the Odisha Protection of Interests of Depositors (In Financial Establishments) Act. He was subsequently sent to jail. 

Police said Rana had invested in more than six Odia movies like Hari Bhai Harena, Target, Gote Sua Gote Sari. 

DCP Umashankar Dash said, “Niranjan Rana is facing more than 15 cases. He was wanted in six cases since 2010. He had duped unsuspecting people on the pretext of providing plots and houses. We have been searching for him for the past one month. However, he used to change places frequently to evade arrest.”

The DCP said marathon questioning of the builder is underway to elicit information regarding the people he has defrauded so far and the amount he mopped up. A high end SUV was also confiscated which has been parked at the police station.

The DCP appealed people who have been victimized by Rana to forward and lodged complaint against him. “Action will be taken against him accordingly,” the DCP added.
