An undertrial prisoner lodged at Atthmalik sub-jail in Angul district died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday night.

The prisoner identified as Suman Dehury was admitted to a local hospital after he was found in an unconscious state on August 8. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

"His health condition was fine prior to August 8. There was health complain. But, he fainted all of a sudden on Sunday following which we immediately rushed him to the hospital. Doctors declared him dead during treatment,” jail superintendent said.

The exact reason of his death has not immediately been established. The body has been kept at the hospital for post-mortem. The cause of his death can only be ascertained after autopsy, he added.

The body will be handed over to his family members with all formalities.

Suman had been lodged at the jail in connection with a murder case.

Reaction from the relatives of the deceased prisoner is not available.

In February, an UTP who was lodged at Nabarangpur sub-jail after being arrested under POCSO Act, had died in similar manner. Two days before the incident, a prisoner had also died mysteriously under judicial custody in Puri.

His family members had alleged foul play behind the death of the UTP and demanded inquiry as per the guidelines of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
