Keonjhar: A family feud took an ugly turn after a man allegedly killed his sister-in-law by slitting her throat before raping his mother-in-law in Keonjhar district of Odisha.

The ghastly incident took place in a forest at Kiribur under Bolani police limits in the district on Sunday.

According to reports, the accused, identified as Rup Singh, had a long-standing dispute with his in-laws. On Sunday, Rup Singh’s sister-in-law and mother-in-law had gone to a nearby forest to collect firewood and other forest produces though which they eke out a living. Singh who searched for them since morning found the duo in the forest and got into a quarrel with them.

During the fight, Singh flew into a rage and slit the throat of his sister-in-law with a sharp weapon. When she died, the accused dumped her body into a 200 ft stone quarry pit.

However, the accused didn’t stop there. He tied the legs and hands of his mother-in-law to a tree and allegedly assaulted her sexually.
Eventually, his mother-in-law managed to escape and landed at a nearby police outpost bordering Jharkhand. She narrated horrifying incident to the on-duty police officials who immediately informed the matter to Bolani police.

A police team led by Barbil Sub-divisional Officer (SDPO) today reached the crime spot and recovered the body of the deceased from the pit and sent it to a hospital for an autopsy.

The police have started investigation into the matter and questioned Singh’s mother-in-law and some of her neighbours. A case has been registered in this regard and investigation is on, the police said.

A manhunt has also been launched to nab the accused who is absconding after committing the crime, they added.
