The accused, who was residing in Delhi, was taken into custody after investigations linked him to a cybercrime that led to a tragic outcome.

According to reports, the foreign national had allegedly obtained obscene photographs and videos of a Cuttack-based individual and used them to extort a significant amount of money. Even after receiving lakhs of rupees, the accused continued to demand more, threatening to leak the explicit content online. When the victim refused to pay further, the accused circulated the private visuals on social media, causing immense distress.

Accused To Be Brought On Remand

Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeohas stated that the arrested accused will be taken on remand for further investigation.

“The accused has allegedly committed fraud by creating multiple fake accounts. It has also been found that payments were made to his account from New Zealand. During the investigation, the police seized five mobile phones and eight SIM cards from the accused,” the DCP said.

Authorities have urged anyone else who may have fallen victim to his fraudulent activities to come forward and report. Additionally, several fake profiles were discovered on his mobile devices. The DCP emphasized that further interrogation during remand will help uncover more details regarding the case.

The case highlights the growing menace of cyber-enabled crimes, especially those targeting individuals through social media and digital platforms.

The Cuttack police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activities to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.

Further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused was operating alone or as part of a larger cybercrime syndicate.
