A little less than a year after the sensational rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Nayagarh district that had triggered a furore in the State, another minor girl met with similar fate with the police on Thursday confirming that she was raped before being murdered.
Nayagarh SP Sidhharth Kataria said the six-year-old girl from Dhundugadia under Banigochhal police limits, whose mutilated body was found at an isolated location near the village on Wednesday, was raped and murdered by a 22-year-old youth of the same village.
According to preliminary investigation, the accused took the girl to a banana orchard near the village on the pretext of showing her his mobile phone. After reaching there, the accused raped the girl and then strangled her with
a plastic rope, police said adding that the accused has been arrested.

The minor girl was playing near her house on June 12 when she went missing. After the girl’s father lodged a complaint, a special police team was formed and a probe was launched.
During the probe, the accused was detained on suspicion. He allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning.
The girl's mutilated body was found at an isolated location near the village on Wednesday.
“The accused who hails from the same village had concealed the body of the girl after committing rape and murder. We nabbed the accused and during interrogation he admitted to killing the girl. He also told us about the place where he disposed the body. Yesterday, the body was recovered. The accused has been forwarded to court today,” the SP said.
Reacting to the shocking incident, social activist Rituparna Mohanty said, “It is a shame. Such incidents are happening repeatedly and that speaks how the system for safety of women and children are working in the State.”
Notably, a five-year-old girl had gone missing while playing in front of her house at Jadupur village of Nayagarh district on July 14. Her skeletal remains were found on July 23.
