In a major drug bust, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch on Tuesday seized over one kg of brown sugar from busy Nuabazar and Ranipatna vegetable markets in Balasore, considered as the biggest hub of narcotics smuggling in the State.

Two persons identified as Ashok Yadav and Suraj Yadav have been arrested in this connection for peddling the banned substance. Along with the drugs which is said to be worth more than a crore in INR, other incriminating materials were also seized from the duo.

Acting on an intelligence input on the cracking of deal for illegal drugs, a 2-member STF team conducted a raid and nabbed the two smugglers before taking posession of the contraband.

As per sources, the accused, who happen to be brothers, are allegedly involved in drugs peddling business in the area for last few years. The STF team had kept a close watch on both of them.

A case has been registered against the duo under sections 21 (C) and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985.

"The accused have been forwarded to the court. Further investigation into the incident is underway," said an STF official.

Notably, since 2020, the STF has seized more than 43 kg of brown sugar and more than 86 quintals of ganja through special drives against narcotic. More than 100 drug peddlers have been arrested in this connection.
