The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested four persons, including an Odia music album director, for their alleged involvement in illegal arms trade.

The four accused were arrested from Badambadi area in Cuttack, informed Cuttack Deputy Commissioner Of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh. They have been identified as Prakash Rout alias Papu (35), Gyana Ranjan Sahoo alias Naba (40), Pramod Kumar Rout alias Jitu (43) and Susanta Parida (49). All four hail from Cuttack district.

"Today at around 10 am, we got a tip-off that an anti-social, Gyana Ranjan Sahoo alias Naba was roaming suspiciously near Jhanjir Mangala area. Acting swiftly, Badambadi police raided the area and seized one 7.65 mm country-made pistol loaded with two rounds of live ammunition from his possession," Singh said while briefing the media.

"During interrogation, Sahoo disclosed that the pistol was purchased from one of the accused Prakash Rout, who deals in illegal arms and ammunition, procuring them from his brother-in-law and professional arms dealer Tukna Swain," Singh added.

Subsequently, two other accused were arrested for their involvement in the illegal syndicate.

The police have seized two country-made pistols and 16 live ammunition from the accused. Several cases have been registered against them in various police stations.

"We are increasing the enforcement activities in view of Durga Puja and close vigil is being kept on anti-social activities," the DCP added.  

According to sources, the Commissionerate Police has seized 50 guns and 1473 ammunitions from Cuttack urban police district (UPD) in 2020.

 Similarly, 51 illegal arms and 254 ammunitions have been seized in 2021 so far.
