A special squad of the Commissionerate Police on Wednesday arrested the miscreant who had attacked a young woman with a knife during a loot bid at Nayapalli VIP Colony in the Capital city on Sunday.

The entire incident, which occurred on May 31, was captured in a CCTV camera installed in the vicinity of the crime scene.
Acting on a tip-off and subsequent to examining the CCTV footage, the special squad conducted raids at few places and nabbed the accused, the police said.

Further questioning of the accused is underway.

In the footage, the miscreant could be seen accosting the woman and trying to snatch her mobile phone. He also allegedly threatened her in the lonely stretch. He then pulled out a knife and attacked the woman on the neck before fleeing the spot.

The miscreant left the woman when she screamed for help. The injured woman was later rushed to a nearby hospital by some passersby.
According to police sources, the unprecedented situation due to Covid-19 has led to an increase in crimes in the Capital City.

“The reason for the sudden spurt in burglary, theft and snatching cases could be attributed to the loss of livelihood due to the lockdown. Most of the accused are habitual offenders. However, they earn their livelihood from different sources. Closure of their income sources has forced them to commit to street crimes,” said a police official while requesting anonymity.
