The Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested a man for allegedly selling duplicate wrist-watches under various noted brands at high prices in busy Badambadi area of Cuttack city.

Based on an allegation, a team of police raided ‘Jeet Market’ at Badambadi bus stand area and seized 884 duplicate watches of various designs for both men and women.

Large numbers of duplicate wrist-watches under the brand name of ‘Fastrack’ were seized from the shop during the raid. The shopkeeper was selling the counterfeit watches at high prices, said SN Muduli, ACP, Zone 6.

“Based on a complaint, a team led by the Inspector-in-charge of Badambadi police station raided the shop and seized around 884 watches of different designs. The shopkeeper couldn’t show any valid documents of his shop and articles. We didn’t find any registration certificate either,” he added.

Muduli said that shopkeeper used to purchase substandard quality of watches from outside State and sell them at lofty prices in the name of branded companies. Further investigation is underway, he said.

The accused has been questioned to get details regarding the logos and labels of reputed companies.

The seizure of duplicate watches from Cuttack city comes after several incidents of crackdown on sale of duplicate food items like edible oil, cement, ghee, honey, sauce, tea and spice manufacturing units.

Adulteration of food and non-food materials has become a major reason of concern for the administration as well as consumers.
