Taking cognisance of the murder of Mamita Meher, a teacher at the Sunshine English Medium School in Mahaling under the Sindhelkela Police limits of Kalahandi district, the Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) on Wednesday sought a detailed report of the case from the SP, Kalahandi.

Terming the murder as ‘shameful’, the premier women’s rights body in the State has directed the office of the Kalahandi SP to furnish a detailed report within 15 days, from today.

Namita Behera, President of the OSCW said, “This is a heinous crime. We have already sought a report from the SP two days back and they will be furnishing the same within 15 days.”

“The Commission has also asked the SP to conduct a free and detailed investigation so that the culprit/s can be brought to justice,” she added.

Gobinda Sahu, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Mamita Meher had confessed to have killed the lady teacher during interrogation. Based on the confession, the Bolangir Police have detained three other persons including, Sahu’s associate Radhe, JCB driver and a clerk at the under construction stadium who allegedly helped him in burying Mamita’s body at the site near the Government High School at Mahaling in Kalahandi.

It is pertinent to mention here that Gobinda Sahu was nabbed by police in Bolangir on Tuesday evening. Sources said police traced Sahu to a sugarcane field at Budhipadar village under Bangamunda block of Bolangir where he had been reportedly hiding.  He was later taken to the Bolangir SP office for detailed questioning in connection with the case.

Earlier on Sunday, Sahu had staged a dramatic escape from police custody when he was detained by the Titlagarh police for questioning in connection with Mamita's disappearance.

It has been alleged by the family of Mamita that Sahu had forced many women employees at the school to keep illicit relationship with him. In fact, he is directly involved in the missing of Mamita because she threatened to expose Sahu, alleged her brother, Bunty Sahu.
